Satisfying the Laws: The "Legenda" of Maria of Venice [Susan Mosher Stuard analyzes the "Vita" of Maria Sturion written by her confessor, Thomas Caffarini. Thomas had been given the task of writing a rule for Dominican penitents, lay people who lived a religious life without vows (and also known as tertiaries or third orders). Maria Sturion (or Maria of Venice) had been abandoned by her young husband and led a religious life at the home of her parents; Caffarini developed a close relationship with her as confessor and teacher.
